In 2024, the academic journal “Archives of Sexual Behavior” published a study of 2,772 adolescents in the Northern Netherlands who were surveyed about feelings of gender dysphoria six times from the ages of 11 to 26. Most of the participants were from a sample of 2,229 youth who were representative of the general population, and the other 543 were children treated at psychiatric outpatient clinics. The study found that 11% of all participants said they wished “to be of the opposite sex” around the age of 11, and this shrunk to 4% by the age of 26. However, the study found that only 0.1% of them “consistently reported gender non-contentedness throughout adolescence and adulthood.” This reveals that feelings of gender dysphoria often come and go, even in the Netherlands, which is a leading European nation for “social acceptance” of “LGBTI equality.”
