Smithfield Bacon has returned to selling one pound packages and at the same price there were trying to pass off 12 ounces for 16. They must have gotten some backlash because it is printed, boldly, on their new packaging, "1 Pound!"

Some companies and restaurants appear to be using inflation as an excuse to price gouge. Others are truly struggling and have no choice but to make changes. Glad to see that at least one major meat supplier realized they couldn't get by with the former.

I thought Mary would appreciate hearing this if she didn't already notice.

I hate to give you the bad news but Smithfield foods (the largest pig and pork producer in the world) is completely 100% owned by China. (The WH group)

Yes. I am aware. They raise the pigs in the US, slaughter them and then send over to China for processing. It is disturbing. I don't eat meat all and haven't for about 35 years now. I buy Smithfield if I'm cooking for a group of people who eat along those lines anyway. A lot of people simply don't care what is in their food. When I serve bacon to people who are particular, it is from a local farmer.

It is interesting that the Chinese company experienced a drop in sales or something that made them realize the average consumer isn't as dumb as they hoped they would be.

My wife and I eat out a lot. Prices are up and quality is done. I suspect more gouging than you'd think.

I hope it is too little too late for companies that pull that. My girl and I went to a farm that raises their own livestock and sells their own meat. It was a two hour drive but worth it. The bacon was better than any store brand. It sealed our decision to move to the country.
