That may be her official excuse, but I think it's clear her motive is to limit the times where she displays her stupidity.
As to normalizing Trump, the left is terrified to present any redeeming traits.
Jimmy Fallon had to apologize for making him look human by mussing his hair.
Their main strategy is to display him as a cold calculating ego driven demon.
You can't follow such a strategy and expect unity.
Trump is often criticized when he compliments an adversary.
Perhaps he shows poor judgement, but he is willing to work with adversaries.
He allows for finding a compromise that benefits both rather than a winner-take-all position which often polarizes the situation to the extent that unity is impossible.
